How the Branched Oak Kids’ White Perch Tournament began — and how it grew
In May of 2012, an inspiring idea sparked in the mind of Randy Tambke—to create a free fishing tournament for children and families. His goal was simple yet powerful: bring people together for a fun day of fishing while raising awareness about the impact of white perch on Nebraska’s fisheries.
Randy shared his idea on the Nebraska Fish and Game Association’s forum at nefga.org, and the community response was overwhelmingly positive. Encouraged by the support, he dove headfirst into organizing the inaugural Branched Oak Kids’ White Perch Tournament (BOKWPT), held on June 30th, 2012.
Determined to make the event memorable, Randy sought donations, sponsors, and volunteers. He gathered prizes, coordinated food, and secured the perfect location. His hope was to welcome around 25 kids and their families.
When the big day arrived, Randy was greeted not by 25 kids—but by 75 excited young anglers, all eager to cast their lines. In that moment, he knew he had created something special. The tournament had the potential to become an annual tradition, and Randy embraced that challenge wholeheartedly.
Year after year, Randy refined and improved the event, always guided by his motto: “Bigger and Better Next Year.” Through his dedication, the BOKWPT grew into the largest children’s fishing tournament in the State of Nebraska.
In June of 2022, Randy made the difficult decision to pass the torch. Wanting the tournament to continue thriving, he entrusted it to the Nebraska Fish and Game Association, who proudly accepted the responsibility and committed to carrying forward his vision.
Today, the Nebraska Fish and Game Association works diligently to preserve and nurture the Branched Oak Kids’ White Perch Tournament, honoring Randy’s legacy and ensuring that his passion for youth, family, and conservation continues to inspire future generations.
