Quick answers to common questions about the tournament
Here are answers to the most common questions we receive about the Branched Oak Kids’ White Perch Tournament. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to reach out to a volunteer on the day of the event.
What time does the BOKWPT start?
Registration opens at 7:00 AM and closes at 10:00 AM. Fishing officially begins at 9:00 AM and ends at 11:00 AM.
How long does the BOKWPT last?
Fishing runs from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Lunch is served immediately afterward, followed by awards and prizes. We should be wrapped by 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM.
What if we arrive early?
You’re welcome to arrive starting at 7:00 AM. After registering, you may find a fishing spot and begin fishing at your leisure. Volunteers will collect all white perch caught before 9:00 AM.
What if we are going to be late?
Registration closes at 10:00 AM sharp. You must be registered to participate, win prizes, and receive lunch.
What do you serve for lunch?
Lunch typically includes hot dogs, chips, and cookies. Additional items may be available depending on donations.
What if I or my child has food allergies?
We cannot guarantee that our food is free of allergens. If you or your child has dietary restrictions, please bring your own food.
Is the BOKWPT really free?
Yes! Registration, prizes, bottled water, and lunch are all free thanks to our donors. However, a Nebraska State Park entry permit is required for vehicles, and anglers aged 16+ must have a valid Nebraska Fishing Permit. These fees are set by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
Do I need a fishing permit for the BOKWPT?
Anglers aged 16 or older must have a valid Nebraska Fishing Permit. We recommend purchasing it before the event.
Do I need a permit to enter the State Park?
Yes. All vehicles entering the park must have a valid Nebraska Park Permit.
What is the age limit to participate in the BOKWPT?
The tournament is open to all ages 0 and up.
Do kids need to be with a parent?
Yes. All participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult for the entire event.
Do I need to have a child with me to participate?
No, but the event is designed for kids and families. We encourage adults to bring a child if possible.
What if my kid(s) are too young to fish alone or have physical limitations?
Assistance is allowed when necessary. We encourage anglers to fish independently when possible.
Is the BOKWPT wheelchair accessible?
The area is not officially wheelchair accessible, but some participants have used wheelchairs without difficulty. Terrain includes mowed grass with bumps and slopes. Contact us at bokwpt@nefga.org for more information.
Can I participate if I don't know how to fish?
Absolutely! Volunteers will be available to teach basic fishing skills and assist throughout the event.
What is a white perch?
White perch are an invasive species found in Branched Oak Lake. See our “White Perch” page for more information.
Can I keep other species of fish I catch?
Yes, as long as they are legally caught and within Nebraska regulations. Please refer to the Nebraska Fishing Guide.
What do you do with all the white perch caught?
White perch cannot be taken home. All white perch caught during the event are donated to local raptor recovery programs to help feed recovering birds of prey.
Is it safe to fish in the BOKWPT?
Fishing is generally safe, but like any outdoor activity, it carries some risk. The area includes grass, uneven terrain, and a rocky shoreline. Weather, insects, wildlife, and natural conditions may also be factors. Please stay off the rocks to avoid slips and falls.
Where do we park?
Parking is available on a paved lot near the fishing area. There are no designated accessible parking spots.
Do I need to bring fishing equipment and bait?
You may bring your own gear, but free loaner rods, reels, and bait are available while supplies last.
What items should I bring?
Recommended items include sunscreen, insect repellent, hand sanitizer, wipes, snacks, drinks, chairs, blankets, pop‑up tents, umbrellas, and sturdy shoes. Many families bring wagons to haul gear. Please follow “Pack it in, Pack it out” and “Leave No Trace.”
Will you cancel the BOKWPT for bad weather?
The event is held rain or shine. Severe weather may cause temporary delays or safety announcements. Participants are responsible for monitoring conditions for their own safety.
Are there public restrooms?
Yes. Primitive restrooms are available near the registration area and swimming beach. There is no running water, but we provide a hand‑washing station.
Is there camping available?
Not at the event site, but camping is available elsewhere at Branched Oak Lake. Spots fill quickly, so reserve early.
